Cathedral InSpires

Cathedral InSpires

April 2019, Headlines, Local, The Church
Rev. James Morgan Rector, Cathedral of Saint Joseph Every day, I have the most spectacular walk in the diocese. Whether it’s early in the morning, sometime during the day, or late at night, walking to and from the Cathedral is breathtaking. Okay, perhaps it’s not THE most spectacular walk (there are several around the diocese I’m sure), but it certainly ranks at the top. Especially when the outline of the massive Romanesque structure atop the hill is framed by the city lights below, creating a “European” aura. Or when you look up at the spires on a sunny day, their peaks piercing the bright blue sky as if they were reaching up to heaven. Or when the setting sun casts giant shadows on surrounding houses, magnifying its immensity. There are…

Joyfully, Full of Hope, We Continue to Proclaim a Living God

[caption id="attachment_2763" align="alignleft" width="200"] Father Jordan SamsonDirector, St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center,Pastor, Sacred Heart Parish, Westport,Associate Vocations Director[/caption] In addition to serving at the Newman Center at Northern State University in Aberdeen and as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Westport, I am excited to join Father Shaun Haggerty in promoting vocations to the priesthood for our diocese. Splitting the vocations director position is not unheard of, and we have done it here in Sioux Falls in the past. Father Haggerty and I have been in discussion about how we can work together using our own particular gifts. We will be doing our best to serve our diocese in this role, and we continue to ask everyone for their prayers and encouragement for more good and holy vocations to the…

Retrouvaille: a program of re-discovery for marriages

Headlines, January 2017, The Church
Deacon Tim Tracy St. Agnes Parish, Vermillion Office of Marriage, Family and Respect Life With Pope Francis and the recent Synod of Bishops attempting to place marriage and the family at the heart of evangelization, it is an excellent time to consider the ways in which we can strengthen and protect our marriages against the stresses, misunderstandings and conflicts that tend to break them apart. Our diocese facilitates a program called Retrouvaille to assist couples in healing and renewing their marriages and I am blessed to work with that program. The word Retrouvaille is a French word meaning rediscovery. The program offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. Thousands of couples headed for cold, unloving relationships or divorce have successfully overcome their marriage problems by attending the program.…

Learning to look outward

Learning to look outward

December 2016, Headlines, The Church
Melinda North, Director Catholic Family Sharing Appeal Why does it always seem that when December rolls around all we can think is, “Wow! Where did the time go?” Is it because we are rushing from event to event or focused on our never-ending “to-do” lists? I’d like to believe it’s because we are living life to the fullest, and that it just zips by, but I’m afraid that in reality I tend to keep my head down, focused and working to finish the proverbial, “to-do list.” Looking back over this past year I realize that one conversation has made it even more memorable than most. A priest-friend of mine challenged me (actually the whole congregation, but it felt like he was talking to me) to see what would happen if we…
