Position Title: Camp Kitchen Director           

Position Status:  Temporary/Seasonal                            

Immediate Supervisor: Father Scott Traynor

Department: Office of Youth Discipleship & Evangelization

Dates of Responsibility: June 23-27, July 6-10, and/or July 11-14

General Introduction:

The Bishop of Sioux Falls is the visible head and source of unity in the particular Church entrusted to his pastoral care (CCC 1594).  In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ’s mission present and enduring while functioning in his role as Shepherd of the Christian Community.  In order to fulfill his mission, the Bishop trusts chosen collaborators (clerics, religious and lay people) to share in the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.  Each employee helps to extend the ministry of the local Pastor in particular ways as outlined in this position description.

Position Summary:

Responsible for directing all aspects of the dietary needs (meals, snacks, etc.) of three Discipleship Camps and the staff training prior held at Broom Tree.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in preliminary planning and preparation for the Summer.
  • Direct all aspects of the dietary needs of the three Diocesan Discipleship Camps during the Summer including:
    • Managing kitchen staff and volunteers
    • Preparing all meals and snacks (excluding the snachristy), with the help of the support staff for the duration of team training and all of camp.  
    • Ensuring all administrative details in regard to the kitchen are handled appropriately
    • Working with Camp Director as needed in regard to mealtimes, serving, set-up, additional staffing needed, etc.
    • Ensuring the facilities are well kept throughout the duration of camp, inventory is taken of supplies and communication with Broom Tree staff is maintained as needed.
    • Maintaining adequate documentation and records for meals and inventory ensuring that the Coordinator for the Diocese has what they need to plan for the following year and for consequent camps for the Summer.
    • Working with catering companies and outside vendors to ensure meal and supply deliveries are confirmed and planning ahead to ensure all details are communicated adequately.
    • Working with Diocesan Event Coordinator in regard to details, planning, and necessary “other work” that needs to be done outside of camp times and preparation/clean-up times.
  • Work with Diocesan staff and assist in leading the camp staff training and preparation day.  
  • Ensure proper clean-up, distribution of leftovers, and return of supplies is handled after camps are over.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Willingness and ability to act as an outstanding personal witness to the Catholic faith and religion by living both one’s professional and personal life in accordance with the doctrines and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, as embodied in the various documents of the Roman Catholic Church, including, without limitation, the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Willingness and ability to serve as a good steward of the resources entrusted to us by making best use of the resources given and taking the initiative to conserve, save, and plan in advance in order to reduce waste.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skilled in preparing and cooking meals for larger groups
  • Skilled in hospitality and the ability to present meals in a way that are appealing to those who partake!
  • Ability to adapt meals to specific dietary needs as necessary and supplement as needed
  • An understanding and working knowledge of common web applications, especially Google Apps.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment to think strategically, multitask, and conform to shifting priorities, demands, and time lines.
  • Proven communication skills, and ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to think, plan and work ahead
  • Ability to keep good record of receipts, etc.

The employee will work with a large number of individuals, often requiring multitasking and working with deadlines and details to ensure all of the essential functions are performed in a timely and courteous manner.
