| Four priests
who have served in the Diocese of Sioux Falls will celebrate
their 50th anniversaries of ordination to the priesthood this
year. One priest of the diocese will celebrate his 25th anniversary
of ordination and one religious order priest serving the diocese
will also celebrate his 25th anniversary of ordination.
50th Anniversary
Father John W. Brady
was born in Worthing on December 16, 1923 to Frank and Ruth
(McMahon) Brady.
He was ordained April 24, 1955, at St. Joseph Cathedral by
Bishop William O. Brady, after finishing his seminary studies
at St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, MN.
Following his ordination, Father Brady served as assistant
pastor at Christ the King Parish, Sioux Falls, during his
first summer as a priest.
In August of that year, Father Brady was assigned as the assistant
pastor for St. Therese Parish, Sioux Falls, where he remained
until June 1957, when he was assigned as one of the chaplains
for McKennan Hospital.
In August 1959, Father Brady was assigned as assistant pastor
of St. Thomas More Parish, Brookings, as well as mission administrator
for the parish in Mellette.
He was then assigned the following spring to serve as chaplain
for the state hospital in Yankton.
Father Brady served in that capacity from 1960 until the fall
of 1981. Beginning in 1970, he was pastor of the parish at
Mayfield during the illness of Father Joseph McCoy.
Father Brady served in the Diocese of San Diego between November
1981 and August 1988.
He returned to the diocese of Sioux Falls to serve as pastor
of St. Peter Parish, White Lake, where he remained until the
fall of 1994 when he retired.
Father Brady continues to reside in Yankton.
Father Leonard D. Fox
was born in Watertown on April 29, 1928 to Albert and Margaret
(Kranz) Fox.
He was ordained April 24, 1955, at St. Joseph Cathedral by
Bishop William O. Brady after finishing his seminary studies
at St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, MN.
Following his ordination, Father Fox first served as assistant
pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Parkston, from the summer of
his ordination until August 1959.
Father Fox served in St. Peter Parish, Platte, from August
1959 through February 1960.
At that time, Father Fox was assigned as the assistant pastor
for St. Agnes Parish, Vermillion, where he remained until
June 1968.
Father Fox was also assigned as the parish administrator for
the parish in Farmer during that time.
Father Fox was then assigned as pastor of Our Lady of Good
Counsel Parish, Elkton, in June 1969 through September 1974.
During his tenure as pastor in Elkton, Father Fox also undertook
mission responsibility for the parish in Aurora.
Father Fox was next assigned as pastor of St. Joseph Parish,
Elk Point, where he served between 1974 and 1980.
From Elk Point, Father Fox was then assigned as pastor in
Groton (St. John Parish, 1980-1986) including mission responsibility
for the parish in Andover.
Father Fox then served as pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Parish
until 1990 when he was assigned as pastor in Parker (St. Christina
Parish) and Lennox (St. Magdalen Parish), 1990-1993.
Father Fox then returned to Vermillion. He was assigned as
pastor of St. Agnes where he remained until retiring in 1998.
He continues to reside in Vermillion.
Father Robert J. Fox
was born in Watertown on December 24, 1927 to Alois and Susie
(Lanentz) Fox.
Father Robert Fox was ordained April 24, 1955, at St. Joseph
Cathedral by Bishop William O. Brady.
He graduated from St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, MN, before
being ordained.
Upon ordination, Father Fox was assigned as assistant at St.
Lawrence Parish, Milbank until January 1959.
At that time, Father Fox was assigned as assistant at St.
Anthony of Padua Parish, Hoven.
In August, 1959, Father Fox was assigned as assistant in Yankton
at Sacred Heart Parish.
He was assigned as parish administrator for St. Anthony Parish,
Bristol, from 1961-1965.
Father Robert Fox was then assigned as pastor for St. Joseph
Parish, Mobridge, in the fall of 1965.
He remained in that assignment until 1970 when he was assigned
as pastor for St. Lawrence Parish, Milbank (1970-1972).
Father Fox was then assigned as pastor of St. Bernard Parish,
Redfield (1972-1984).
During his assignment in Redfield, Father Fox also took responsibility
as administrator of the St. Ann Parish, Frankfort.
Father Fox was then assigned as pastor of Immaculate Conception
Parish, Waubay, where he served from 1984-1985.
Father Robert Fox was, at that time, assigned as pastor of
St. Mary of Mercy, Alexandria.
Father Fox served as pastor of St. Mary of Mercy from 1985
until his retirement in 2003.
Father Robert Fox currently lives in Hanceville, AL.
Msgr. Richard J. Mahowald
was born in Watertown on August 22, 1930 to Benedict and Mary
(Rozum) Mahowald.
Msgr. Mahowald was ordained in Rome at the chapel of the North
American College by Bishop Martin J. O’Connor on December
17, 1955.
Upon his return to the diocese, Father Mahowald was assigned
as chaplain to the Presentation Home in the summer and fall
of 1956, when he was assigned as an assistant for Holy Family
Parish, Mitchell (1956-1959).
He was then assigned as assistant pastor for St. Agnes Parish,
Vermillion, for a short period of time before being assigned
to Newman Center training in Grand Forks, ND.
Upon completion of the training, he was assigned once again
as assistant pastor of Holy Family Parish, Mitchell, for two
months in 1960.
He was then assigned as administrator for All Saints Parish,
Mellette.
In the fall of 1960, Father Mahowald was assigned as chaplain
for the Pius XII Newman Center, Brookings. He remained there
until 1966.
He spent the next 12 years in Rome, first completing his doctorate,
then serving as superior of the Casa Santa Maria and founding
and directing the Institute for Continuing Theological Education.
Upon his return in 1978, Msgr. Mahowald was assigned as pastor
for St. Lawrence Parish, Milbank, where he remained until
1980.
At that time, Msgr. Mahowald was asked to serve as pastor
of St. Agnes Parish, Vermillion. He remained in that assignment
until 1986.
For a semester in 1984 and between 1986-1988, Msgr. Mahowald
was on leave to teach at the University of Dallas and followed
that experience with a teaching assignment at St. Thomas College,
St. Paul, MN.
Upon his return to the diocese in 1991, Msgr. Mahowald was
assigned as pastor of Christ the King Parish. Sioux Falls.
In 1994, he was appointed vicar general of the diocese, a
position he held until 2000.
In 2000, Msgr. Mahowald was assigned as spiritual director
at Casa Santa Maria of the North American College, Rome.
He remains in that assignment today.
25th Anniversary
Father Joseph T. Forcelle
was born in Faribault, MN, on August 1, 1953 to Phillip and
Esther (Stadler) Forcelle.
Father Forcelle was ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese
of St. Paul/Minneapolis on May 31, 1980 by Bishop John R.
Roach in St. Paul, MN.
He later began the incardination process into the Diocese
of Sioux Falls in May 1986 and was incardinated into the diocese
in February 1988.
Father Forcelle served as pastor of St. Theresa Parish, Beresford
from June 1986 through July 1981.
He was then assigned as pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel,
Elkton and St. William, Aurora from 1991-1994.
In January 1994, Father Forcelle was assigned as pastor of
St. Paul Parish, White, as director of the Newman Center,
Brookings and he continued as sacramental minister for St.
William Parish, Aurora.
In June 1995, Father Forcelle was assigned as associate pastor,
St. Lambert Parish, Sioux Falls, while serving an internship
in counseling at Charter Hospital from 1995-1996.
From January 1996 to July 1997, Father Forcelle served as
a part-time counselor for Catholic Family Services.
He was then assigned as pastor of St. John deBritto Parish,
Britton and St. Anthony Parish, Hecla.
Father Forcelle then served as pastor of St. Mary Parish,
Dell Rapids from 1999-2000.
Since June 2000, Father Forcelle has been assigned as director
of the St. Thomas More Newman Center at the University of
South Dakota and pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Wakonda.
Father Forcelle has been elected to a three year term as midwest
representative on the executive board of the Catholic Campus
Minister Association. The group advises the National Conference
of Catholic Bishops concerning campus ministry and its future.
Father Gary Lantz, SCJ,
was born in Springfield, IL, on December 8, 1935.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957 including service
in Korea (1956-1957).
Lantz entered the seminary in 1973 at Great Barrington, MA.
He professed first vows in 1975 with the Priests of the Sacred
Heart.
He was ordained to the priesthood January 26, 1980.
In the Diocese of Sioux Falls, Father Lantz began Native American
ministry at the Kateri Center from 1980-1982.
He later was assigned to ministry at St. Joseph Indian School,
Chamberlain from 1984-1986.
He served with the approval of his religious superior to ministry
at Lower Brule from 1989-1992 and as pastor of St. Mark Parish,
Lake Andes while serving as a sacramental minister for St.
Paul Parish, Marty from 1992-1996.
Between 1996 and 1999, Father Lantz served as chaplain for
St. Mary Hospital, Pierre, while ministering to the Native
American congregation in that part of the diocese.
Since 1996, Father Lantz has served as chaplain to the women’s
prison, Pierre.
In 1999, he accepted the assignment as pastor of Blessed Kateri
Church, Pierre, where he continues to serve the Native American
community.
