The key to winning the spiritual war
against the culture of death is to convert hearts and minds.
We must work to empower everyone to be 100% pro-life, all the
time, in everything and everywhere.
The respect life movement is broad in its scope, and over thousands
of years the Church has witnessed first hand the power of its
ministry - from helping mothers in an unplanned pregnancy, to
assisting the handicapped for whom life can be a lonely struggle,
to reaching out to those who are dying both physically and spiritually.
But this ministry is not without trials and tribulations. The
threats to human life have been, and continue to be, constant
and ever developing. It is amazing how the human intellect can
devise new ways to kill, often under the guise of mercy and
love.
This is why the pro-life movement needs all faithful Catholics.
No matter how simple a role, we must all be involved in the
fight to restore a culture of life to our state, country and
world. Perhaps you have asked: What can I do to make a difference?
One way is to boldly advertise the truths of our faith. This
is a very efficient and productive way to reach members of our
society who have come to rely on this media mode.
With a Planned Parenthood clinic located in their own parish
boundary, killing hundreds of South Dakotan children each year,
the St. Michael’s Knights of Columbus Council has embarked
upon a pro-life billboard campaign hoping to help stop our nation’s
biggest tragedy - over 43 million young lives lost to abortion
since 1973.
With the help of Ted Thoms, the Knights on the abortion billboard
committee were able to negotiate a very favorable contract with
Flynn Advertising. They now have at least one 10 foot by 21
foot pro-life billboard up throughout the year in Sioux Falls.
The newest billboard located at Minnesota Avenue and Eighth
Street has the picture of an aborted baby lying on a flag with
a quote from Pope John Paul II: “A nation that kills its
own children is a nation without hope.”
Knights Steve Scherer, Jon Schulte, Don Munson, Monty Miller
and Henry Evans meet four times a year to decide on the message
that will have the most impact on their community. Their motto
is that if they can save just one baby from abortion, their
efforts will have been successful.
Billboards are a great tool to spread the message of life. If
you don’t have one in your community, find out how to
get one. If you have one, find out who is sponsoring it and
help them ensure it continues to advertise a pro-life message.
If you are struggling with developing a message, contact the

Another simple idea is to make your vehicle a traveling billboard.
Pro-life bumper stickers are eye-catching and cost effective.
Many organizations have static stickers for your windows that
can be easily removed, and magnetic strips on to which you
can stick regular bumper stickers and place them anywhere
on the outside of your vehicle. Both of these not only protect
your vehicle from damage, but also allow you to change your
pro-life messages throughout the year. The Victory Won website
listed above has many bumper stickers to choose from, as well
as the magnetic strips. Children of the Rosary (www.childrenoftherosary.org)
and Heritage House (www.hh76.com) also have a wide selection.
Imagine the number of people you could reach if there were
50 or 100 cars in your community with pro-life messages. Sometimes
it’s the simple things that make the biggest difference.
