The Diocese of Sioux Falls newest parish,
St. Katharine Drexel, now has a pastor.
Father Joe Vogel will lead the new parish as it gets started
this summer. Father Vogel will not be moving far for his new
assignment. He is currently pastor of the diocese’s largest
parish, St. Michael.
Father Vogel has plenty of work ahead of him as he goes about
establishing the new parish and he is already heavily involved
in the process of planning and getting the new parish started.
“We need to find a place for a rectory and we need to
find a place for offices,” he said.
Father Vogel says he is considering a twin home or a duplex
for the rectory/office space issue but he will have to see what
is available.
St. Katharine Drexel Parish will get most of its families from
St. Michael Parish.
The new parish will eventually be located along West 26th Street
and west of the Tea-Ellis Road.
This is the first time Father Vogel has been asked to start
a new parish, but he has been involved before in building projects
at parishes where he has been the pastor. “When I’ve
moved before, you visit once or twice but you don’t really
think about the new parish until you get there,” he said.
“We need to find a place to reserve for Saturday worship
and Sunday worship. That all has to be done now.”
Zoning variances for meetings and parking might be needed depending
on where the rectory is located.
St. Katharine Drexel Parish will become the ninth parish to
serve the city of Sioux Falls and will likely start out with
400-600 families when they begin worshipping as a parish after
July 1.
Since Father Vogel is already serving as pastor of St. Michael
Parish, Sioux Falls, he already knows many of the people that
will become part of his new parish congregation.
“There’s a lot to do but you do a little bit at
a time and there’s a lot of good people helping and so
it’s kind of exciting,” he said.
