Pope John Paul II has named Father
Charles M. Mangan a “Chaplain of His Holiness,”
which bestows the title of “Monsignor” on the
native of Aberdeen.
“I thank the Holy Father for this kind gesture,”
Monsignor Mangan said, “but I’m aware that in
the Diocese of Sioux Falls there are many far more deserving
priests. I’m conscious of the good example that I’ve
been given by my parents, my brothers and sisters, Bishops
Carlson, Dudley and Hoch, the clergy, the religious and the
laity of our diocese.”
The 41-year-old has been pursuing graduate studies in Rome,
focusing on a doctorate degree in Mariology. He also has a
degree in canon law.
Monsignor Mangan is a frequent contributor to numerous publications
including The Bishop’s Bulletin and Laywitness magazine.
The new monsignor was also pleased the appointment came at
a special time.
“I accept this unmerited recognition as we celebrate
the 25th anniversary of the Holy Father’s election,
the recent beatification of Mother Teresa, the 20th anniversary
of the episcopal ordination of Bishop Carlson and the 10th
anniversary of his arrival in our diocese,” he said.
Monsignor Mangan is currently serving as an officer in the
Vatican Congregation of Institutes of Consecrated Life and
Societies of Apostolic Life in Vatican City.
The Congregation directly assists Pope John Paul II by its
competency in matters regarding religious orders of men and
women around the world.
Monsignor Mangan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Mangan,
who are members of Sacred Heart Parish, Aberdeen.
