The South Dakota Legislature concluded its 2018 legislative session.
The South Dakota Catholic Conference monitored the session and offers a 2018 legislative recap:
Senate Bill 110 was signed into law after strong support in both legislative chambers. The bill strengthens the responsibilities of pregnancy help centers, which seek to support mothers facing unplanned pregnancies. The law builds on a foundation of pro-life legislative action in South Dakota.
House Bill 1123 was defeated in the Senate after first passing through the House. The bill would have prevented the seriously mentally ill from receiving the death penalty if convicted of capital crimes. This was the first time in several years that such legislation succeeded in even a single chamber, and it gave occasion to discuss the Church’s teaching, as stated at paragraph 2267 of the Catechism, and to share the pro-life witness joyfully proclaimed by Pope St. John Paul II.
Faithful citizenship in the public square is an important duty. Above all else, our lives must be shaped and guided by our burning love for Jesus. Even in politics, He will show us the way.
