The Catholic schools of the Diocese of Sioux Falls will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week, January 28-February 3.
Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week has been the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week.
The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.”
Schools, including those across the diocese, typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members.
Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.
Schools usually celebrate with daily themes. They celebrate the local community with service activities. Special attention is given to recognizing the contributions of faculty, staff and volunteers, the commitment of their parish, the call to discern vocations, the dedication of their families and of course, the students themselves. Katie Mellor, director of Catholic schools for the diocese said, “It’s usually a very busy, fun week.”
Catholic Schools Week Mass takes on special significance in several communities in the Diocese.
The largest gathering of schools is in Sioux Falls on Feb. 2 at the Elmen Center at 10 a.m. for the celebration of Mass with Bishop Paul J. Swain.
